Financial and Taxation Accountant

Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. (“PNG”), a subsidiary of AltaGas Ltd. (“AltaGas”), owns and operates natural gas transmission and distribution systems in northern British Columbia.

PNG is a rate regulated utility and as such follows accounting practices specific to the rate regulated industry and reports under USGAAP. PNG is regulated by the BCUC and prepares filings every two years with subsequent information requests. The rate regulated aspect permeates throughout the accounting function and exposure to a rate regulated entity is highly desirable in this role.

PNG is a small company and accordingly this is a hands-on role. Strong accounting knowledge, problem solving and the ability to dig down to the GL level is required.

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this position is located in our Vancouver, BC office. As an integral member of the Finance Team, this position is involved with the monthly, quarterly and annual compliance and preparation of PNG’s financial reporting requirements along with PNG’s corporate and indirect tax reconciliations and returns.

DUTIES

Financial Reporting

  • Monthly
    1. Assist with the preparation of the monthly management report including financial and operations statistics and analysis for AltaGas
    2. Prepare and distribute additional financial schedules and analysis as required by AltaGas
    3. Prepare monthly regulatory deferred charges and imputed interest journal entries. Prepare, analyze and maintain deferred charges schedules
    4. Prepare select GL reconciliations
    5. Assist with monthly close tasks and processes
  • Quarterly and Year End Financial Reporting
    1. Assist with the preparation of financial statements and supporting note disclosure for external distribution, including supporting working papers
    2. Keep track of changes and developments in USGAAP
    3. Assist with the analysis and adoption of new accounting standards and policies
    4. Assist and support the year-end external financial statement audit process

Taxation

  • Prepare monthly current and deferred tax provisions for all entities and supporting effective income tax rate reconciliations. Maintain and reconcile current income tax payable accounts
  • Prepare quarterly tax reporting to AltaGas
  • Prepare annual corporate income tax returns including supporting working papers
  • Calculate corporate tax instalment requirements and pay monthly remittance amounts
  • Review, remit and pay monthly PST, GST, Carbon Tax and Motor Fuel Tax returns within applicable filing deadlines
  • Assist with interpretation of indirect tax matters and audits
  • Assist with implementation of any changes to indirect tax legislation
  • Assist with periodic tax audits
  • Provide support and clarification to A/P and Customer Care Dept.’s regarding tax issues

Treasury

  • Set-up online banking wire payments and coordination of online approvals
  • Assistance with other Treasury tasks as needed

Internal Controls

  • Assist with internal control documentation updates
  • Assist and support the internal and external audit processes

Regulatory

  • Provide assistance with the preparation of regulatory filings and information requests

Other

  • Provide assistance with other finance related tasks and projects as needed

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional Designation CPA, CA, CMA or CGA, with 5 or more years of work experience with a sound knowledge of corporate tax
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a highly detailed environment
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with computerized financial reporting system and analytical tools including advanced Excel, Microsoft Office, JD Edwards and Hyperion
  • Proven business acumen, with problem-solving and decision-making ability
  • Approachable, flexible and able to adapt in a fluid work environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation and communication
  • Working knowledge of Taxprep software
