Financial Analyst

Pacific Northern Gas Ltd., a subsidiary of AltaGas Ltd., owns and operates natural gas transmission and distribution systems. The Company’s western transmission line extends from the Spectra Energy gas transmission system north of Prince George to Kitimat and Prince Rupert, and provides services to twelve communities and a number of industrial facilities. In the northeast, Pacific Northern Gas (N.E.) Ltd. provides gas distribution service in the Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Tumbler Ridge areas.

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Accounting, this position is located in our Vancouver, B.C., office. The Financial Analyst is responsible for preparing reconciliations and a number of key processes. The Financial Analyst provides verification of financial data to ensure accurate and timely information is available for reporting. Additionally, this position is in charge of revenue and expense transaction processing, as well as preparing a number of monthly commodity tax returns.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Month-end Process

  • Develop and process Banner, manual billings for industrial customers & other miscellaneous revenue adjustment entries
  • Review, investigate and update the STATs files with Banner & manually billed GJ’s and revenue, customer count & unbilled info, rates
  • Prepare and maintain monthly and period end accruals
  • Accrue interest/standby fee on outstanding debt/demand loan
  • Document prepaid expenses, provide accounting of regulatory deferrals (property tax, long term and short term interest deferrals, customer deposits)

GL Account Reconciliations

  • Bank accounts, long term debt, interest payable, intercompany and other various

Indirect Tax Returns

  • Prepare monthly commodity tax returns (GST, PST, motor fuel, & carbon tax)

Treasury

  • Maintain debt/cash position schedule reporting to AltaGas
  • Initiate wire transfers for gas purchases, dividend payments, debt repayments, interest payments and management fees

Quarterly Reporting to AltaGas

  • Design & maintain debt schedule outlining interest expense, interest paid, interest payable, and the 5 year principal repayment schedule
  • Perform AR aging analysis

Budget

  • Provide assistance in the budgeting process.
  • Consolidate budget templates and create pivot tables.

General

  • Assist with BCUC information requests
  • Franchise fee reconciliation & payments
  • Property tax -1% levy calculation
  • Perform other duties and special projects as required

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • University degree or business diploma with emphasis on accounting or finance
  • Experience and knowledge of the utility industry is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and planning skills with the ability to think strategically
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a highly detailed environment
  • Advanced computer skills and experience with financial reporting system and analytical tools including advanced Excel, Microsoft Office, JD Edwards and Hyperion
  • Proven business acumen, with problem-solving and decision-making ability
  • Approachable, flexible and able to adapt in a fluid work environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation and communication skills
